University of South Bohemia

The Natural Science Faculty of the University of South Bohemia was established from the university’s Biology Faculty (founded 1991) on 1 August 2007. This led to an expansion of the specialist studies of the biological disciplines of chemistry, physics, mathematics and information study programmes and the multi-disciplinary education of future teachers. It is currently possible to study within nine departments and four institutes (see http://shp.prf.jcu.cz/binowiki/index.php?n=BINOLUPA.Katedry.)

Master and doctoral study programmes include field research in many exotic countries such as Papua New Guinea, Antarctica, Africa and ocean areas, particularly in regard to investigating oceanic zoology.

Over the years, the Natural Science Faculty has housed numerous student cooperative projects with Czech and international university and institute research teams.

Since its foundation, the Natural Science Faculty has placed great emphasis on daily meetings with a scientific worker who is active internationally. The philosophy of work with a student is that science and research is what differentiates a university the most from secondary school in terms of education. The Faculty tries to educate its students with the help of results from practical research more than by reproducing the constantly same theoretical knowledge. There are currently 1,024 students studying at the Natural Science Faculty.

Inaugural meeting of the RCE Czechia

On 27th April 2017, the Regional Center of Expertise Czechia was officially launched. After more than a year of efforts by the Charles University Environmental Center, the network was successfully accredited by the United Nations University (UNU). In the Czech Republic, RCE Czechia is the first association of this type, joining the network of Regional Centers of Expertise across the world which today comprises more than 150 such RCE associations. In Central and Eastern Europe, this model of cooperation has been applied only minimally – so far only 4 RCEs have been established in Albania, Russia and Serbia. Full minutes from the opening meeting can be downloaded here.

RCE Czechia is direct follow-up of the MOSUR Project. You can read more about RCE Czechia on its web pages.
